Since we have been getting a bunch of applications lately that haven't met our standards me and some other members took some time to write down a few hints and tips for those with little experience or success in applying to serious raiding groups or guilds.

1. First consider what a serious raid group/guild is - it means that a certain standard is expected of your commitment and abilities. It's just like in sports. You may get into your local youth football club just by asking, but any more advanced group of players will need to be convinced of your worth as a (team-)player first. So put yourself into that mindset. "It's just a game" - no, it's a hobby and if you want to play with the good players (talking of raiding here) you have to be up for it.

That was the single most important point. All else follows from this and from here on there is no particular order of tips.

2. Apply with proper enchants and gems. E. g. if you are a caster and don't have 63 spellpower on your MH weapon (or a staff enchant) you better explain why.

3. If your spec is different from cookie cutter builds, better explain why.

4. If your raid experience (we can check achievements) isn't high-end that's ok, we all have to start somewhere. Your job then is to convince everyone that you are promising and worth the investment of time. First of all try to convince your reviewers that you are willing to listen and learn fast. The game is deeper than many give it credit for. Most successful groups/guilds will be ready to accept even an undergeared app if they think you are an exceptional player, cause there aren't a lot.

5. Same goes for gear. Explain the short-comings and how you would like to address them (e. g. by being available for alt raids on off days or just a hint that you have an idea of where you want to go).

6. Spell-check your app. Some guilds don't care, but many do. You might want to get rid of "lol"s and such eye sores.

7. As dps, be sure to understand hit rating and if you don't meet the cap (or go way over it) explain why. Same goes for other roles, understand your primary stats well.

8. Know your best meta gem and glyphs. So many people get this wrong.

9. If you don't have dual spec, explain why.

10. You should make an effort to log out wearing the gear set of the spec for which you are applying. Nobody is going to guess whether you have a better set of gear in your bags, people are going to judge the application by whatever the Armory shows at any given moment.

11. Be clear about what role/spec you are applying as (or where your interests lie).

Your application is your one and only chance to make a good first impression. If it's full of bad spelling and grammar, doesn't answer the questions that the application form asks, and is generally horrible to read, then that's what people are going to remember. As the (in)famous Sebudai put it: You may be God's gift to raiding, but if you write like a moron, we're going to assume you are a moron.

Brenor's tip: If you answer the spec question with "i spec for maxx dps" or some inane bullshit like that, I will stop reading right there and decline your application.

Same for any other questions that invite you to demonstrate understanding of your chosen class.
